With the incredibly popular M Sport spec, you get a bespoke leather steering wheel, sports seats and Professional Navigation. xLine adds more upmarket touches, including aluminium satin roof rails and sports seats in Vernasca leather. SE features Vernasca leather, high-gloss interior trim, Business Navigation and Park Assist. The 2018-on generations of BMW X3 launched with three trim levels: SE, xLine and M Sport. Which trim level should you choose on a used BMW X3? That’s much the same as the previous generation of second-hand BMW X3s, but the wheelbase is 5cm longer, unlocking extra interior space.

At 4.7 metres long, it’s a similar size to the BMW 3 Series with which it shares its underpinnings. The third-generation BMW X3 is available as a five-door, five-seat, mid-sized SUV. Harder to find but even more desirable is the M40d, the ultimate diesel and arguably the ultimate all-round X3. However, moving up to the hugely popular 30d brings with it BMW’s silky straight-six diesel engine with far more muscular performance and still attractive running costs. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder 18d and 20d are the two junior diesel models and offer a great blend of performance and fuel economy. The plug-in hybrid 30e combines a four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor – you can enjoy up to 34 miles of zero-emissions motoring with the ease of quickly filling up with petrol for longer trips. The result is incredible performance with sure-footed handling. Topping both is the X3 M, again with a 3.0-litre engine, but this time it’s shared with the BMW M3. The petrol range starts with the four-cylinder 2.0-litre engine in both 20i and 30i spec, then steps up to the M40i model, which is fitted with BMW’s exceptional 3.0-litre straight-six turbocharged engine.

All models are equipped with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Most are badged xDrive (BMW’s all-wheel drive technology), though rear-wheel drive sDrive models are available on some four-cylinder variants. The BMW X3 is available with a range of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid engines. Or try these: Audi Q5, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Volvo XC60 Your engine choices on a used BMW X3

Browse our full catalogue online or head to your nearest Motorpoint store to test drive your chosen BMW X3 from our second-hand range. We’ve got plenty of used BMW X3s for sale at Motorpoint. Because the X3 is based on 3 Series underpinnings, there’s still plenty of space inside, and running costs can be really quite affordable, especially for the four-cylinder models.

Now in its third generation (2018-present), the X3 is every bit the mini-me X5 fun to drive, stylishly designed and more than capable enough off-road for the vast majority of buyers − even if its suspension is very much focused on road driving. Sure enough, the BMW X3 followed in 2003. When BMW put the ‘Sport’ into Sport Utility Vehicle with the X5 in 1998, it was only a matter of time before it repeated the trick one segment down.
